This Halloween weekend, the SASSYspinners were treated to a fibre filled day of show and tell, felted wares from Kyrgyzstan, and a chance to try our hands (and wrists) at felting. We used the leftover fleece of Lollipop and Belinda, our Back to Back challenge sheep in 2003 and 2004.
Every SASSY get together starts with Show and Tell.
And now for a wee bit of colour. Wendy's fair isle purse is being knit with hand dyed yarn.
This is Sandi's lovely little handknit pony. The horse with No Name. He is flanked by Sandi's handknit mittens, handspun skeins and handspun mohair lace scarf.
Ruth's short row scarf. She is handknitting this from a special dyeing project. The ball of yarn is placed in the dye, then turned over. This creates a yarn of varied gradations of colour.
Jim Stone was our special guest from Olds College. He has recently returned from the country of Kyrgyzstan. He gave an informative slide show presentation about the country, and brought a trunk full of traditional fine crafts made by artisans of the region.
Let the felting begin!
Ruth and Wendy arrange the fibre layers on the grass mat. Wendy's motto - think ahead and think BIG!
This is our rolled grass mat technique. This worked well for making larger pieces, but grass is too soft. We concluded an actuall bamboo mat would have been ideal.
We tried a number of techniques for "agitating" the fibre. This is the bubblewrap technique. We think it would have worked better with "mini" bubble wrap.
This piece recieved the loving agitation of Sandi's hands - only Sandi's hands... none of us were allowed to touch!
This is Wendy's felted piece. She is planning to needlefelt on the surface, and make a pilllow - I think.
Judi's Amethyst felt. I felted this piece with a layer of purple locks sandwiched within the main fibre, and added a few bits on top. This resulted in a subtle shading, which I like.
