018 Madder_root_1

• Middle East, south central Asia, Europe
• Dyestuff: roots, plant tops.

Procedure notes:

• Alum mordant recommended for true reds. Use equal weights dyestuff and fibre for strong colours. Can be up to 4:1
• Chop up madder root into small pieces. Simmer gently to extract dye colour but once the fibre is added keep temperature well below simmer to keep the reds bright. Higher simmering temps will turn reds browner and duller.
• For best results keep the roots in the dye pot.
• Madder dyeing sessions can be extended over several days, keeping the fibres in the dye pot at least one to two days. Colours can be modified using alkaline modifiers and acidic modifiers.
